Wild Bergamot Seeds

Perennial / Biennial

Description

Monarda fistulosa

A must-have for pollinator lovers! Wild Bergamot (also known as Monarda, or Bee Balm), bursts with fragrant, lavender-pink blooms that bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds can’t resist. This tough and cheerful perennial thrives in gardens, meadows, and wild spaces, bringing movement, color, and life all summer long. Plus, its aromatic leaves make a lovely herbal tea and adds fragrant whimsy to floral arrangements. Drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and easy to grow, it’s the perfect pick for a low-maintenance, high-impact cut flower garden. This perennial blooms in its second year.

    Planting Instructions

    SOWING:

Transplant: Sow the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting out. Can be direct sown from early spring up until 8 weeks before the first frost in the fall.  Sow about one seed per inch in rows 18" apart. Thin to 12-18" apart.

Germination Requirements: Barely cover as light aids germination

Days to Germination: Germinates in 7-14 days at 60-70°F (16-21°C)

    GROWING:

    Light Preference: Sun/Part Shade

    Plant Height:   36-48" inches

    Plant Spacing: 12 - 18 inches

    Pinching: No

    Flower Support: Not needed

Days to Bloom: 365 days (blooms second year after planting)

Pests/Disease: Bee balm is prone to powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions or when stressed by factors like drought. To help prevent it, keep the soil consistently moist while avoiding overhead watering. Space plants generously to promote airflow, and promptly remove any affected foliage to stop the fungus from overwintering. Every three years, divide the plant—discarding the older center growth and replanting the fresh side shoots

    HARVEST AND VASE LIFE:

    Yield: 7-10 stems per plant

Harvest Fresh: Harvest when first few florists are beginning to open on the first flower. Flowers will continue to open after cutting.

Edible leaves: Starting the first year, leaves may be harvested. More leaves may be harvested each year as plant size increases.

    Expected Vase Life: 5-10 days

    Harvest Dry:

    USES:

Cut Flower, Dried Flower, Edible Flower, Garden Beds, and Beneficial Insect Plantings
