Lupinus perennis

Lupine is a sturdy stem that serves as a bold line flower in floral designs. This mix of lupine is a collection of blues and purples collected from several gardens in my home town of Corinth, Vermont. I believe this is the native perennial species Lupinus perennis but I did not plant the original plants so I'm not 100% sure on the variety identification.

    Planting Instructions

    SOWING:

    Transplant: Sow 4-8 weeks before planting out. Seedlings can tolerate a light frost. Lupine need ample space for root development.  For best results, plant in deep cell trays or pots to support healthy seedling and taproot growth. Shallower trays can be used, but do not delay transplanting. Before planting out, harden off seedlings. For direct seeding, cover seeds with 1/4" of soil or growing media, as darkness aids germination.

    Germination Requirements: Cover seeds as darkness aids gemination.

    Days to Germination: Germinates in 14-21 days at 65-75°F (18-24°C). If you are having trouble germinating seeds, prespout the seeds by placing between damp paper towels in a ziploc bag and place in a refrigerator. Then plant sprouted seed in your planting medium.

    Light Preference: Sun/Part Shade

    Plant Height:   24-40 inches

    Plant Spacing: 9-12” for cut flower production, 18-24" for landscape, 

    Pinching: No

    Flower Support: No

    Days to Bloom: 365 days, blooms second year

    HARVEST AND VASE LIFE:

    Yield: 1-3 stems per plant

    Harvest Fresh: Harvest when 1-4 rows of florets have opened on a spike. Flowers will continue to open after cutting.

    Expected Vase Life: 5-6 days
