Planting Instructions

SOWING:

Transplant: Sow seeds 4-6 weeks before planting out. Strawflower is a finicky hardy annual - it can be planted out in cool temperatures but needs to be hardened off and protected from frost.

Germination Requirements: Do not cover seed as light is required for germination. Strawflower germinates best when seed is fresh.

Days to Germination: Germinates in 7-10 days at 70-75°F (21-24°C)

GROWING:

Light Preference: Sun

Plant Height: 36-40 inches

Plant Spacing: 6-9 inches for cut flower production

Pinching: Pinching is recommended branching. I usually pinch half of my plants to extend the harvesting window.

Flower Support: Yes, recommended

Days to Bloom: 75-85 days

HARVEST AND VASE LIFE:

Yield: 3-7 stems per plant

Harvest Fresh: Cut when 2-3 layers of petals have unfolded but before flowers fully open to reveal center. I harvest when i can see a “belly button” in the center of the flower.  Note: Harvest on bright mornings or let your harvested blooms set in light for a few hours. Blooms will close in the dark of night and on dark, overcast days. Overly mature blooms can appear as if they are at a good stage for cutting when harvested in overcast days or in the dark.

Expected Vase Life: 7-10 days

Harvest Dry: Be sure to harvest in the “belly button” stage and harvest in bright sun. An overly mature bloom will shatter and appear discolored when dried.

USES:

Cut Flower, Dried Flower, Garden Beds, and Beneficial Insect Plantings
